How it Works

The M-VF valve instantly detects surges in the system’s flow rate. When the surge exceeds a predetermined set point, the valve automatically closes, stopping the fluid flow. Once the line break is repaired and pressure within the system equalizes, the valve will automatically reset, allowing normal flow to resume.

This automatic reset feature, particularly the intrinsic reset capability (up to 200 psig maximum operating pressure), adds a layer of convenience and system uptime. The valve also features controlled bleed options, and it can operate effectively with both liquids and gasses.

To reduce the need for new plastic, WAGO now offers an environmentally friendly version of one of its most popular products, the 221 Series Splicing Connector.

Minimizing the Environmental Impact

The new Green Range 221 Series consists of post-consumer recycled material and bio-based residues. Using an internal recycling process, WAGO uses plastic regranulate to produce new connectors. The housing consists of 77% bio-circular material made from paper and forestry residues, as well as the residues from the production of vegetable oils and reused edible fat. About the PFCQ Series

Designed for clean, compressed air or nitrogen, SMC’s PFCQ Series Flow Controller adjusts the flow automatically in response to an analog voltage or current signal. Highly accurate with 3% Full Scale (FS), this device combines a body, flow sensor, linear motor, valve and electronics to achieve the desired flow rate.

Here’s how the device works. The built-in linear motor changes the valve opening by moving the motor-mounted valve element, thus adjusting the flow rate inside the valve. When the flow rate command signal is input to the controller, the internal operation circuit performs a comparison calculation with the flow rate measured by the sensor. The device then drives the motor based on that value to control the flow rate. When the motor is de-energized, the valve is closed via the attractive force of the permanent magnet mounted to the motor.

The PFCQ features linear control within the rated flow range of 9 to 300 liters per minute. It is grease- and oil-free with no copper or aluminum in the fluid flow path, making it suitable for semiconductor equipment like front-opening unified pods (FOUP) and equipment front-end modules (EFEM). This compatibility helps in maintaining the stringent cleanliness standards required in semiconductor fabrication plants.

In terms of connectivity, the PFCQ is equipped with a D-sub connector for power and input signals. It also supports optional connections to digital flow monitors for enhanced monitoring and control.

A demonstration of how wireless technology can enhance automation will be on display at Pearse Bertram+ Streamline Manufacturing's booth 3028 at the Eastern States Exposition (Eastec) in West Springfield, MA, October 19 - 21. The company will display the latest Omron collaborative robot and the software behind its inner workings.

BLOOMFIELD, Connecticut; October 14, 2021 - Pearse Bertram+ Streamline Contract Manufacturing, a contract manufacturer and distributor of manufacturing components, will be demonstrating the benefits of wireless technology with its demonstration project at its booth number 3028 at the Eastern States Exposition (Eastec) in West Springfield, Massachusetts, October 19-21, 2021.

The demo, known as the Pearse+ High Striker, is a modern-day version of traditional "strong man" ring-the-bell games found at carnivals in which contestants try to win a prize by swinging a mallet with enough force to clang a bell at the top of a tower.

With the Pearse Bertram+ High Striker, an individual whacks a pneumatic cylinder with a hammer, generating an analog electrical signal of up to ten volts, depending on how much force is exerted. The signal is then transmitted through an SMC EX-600 wireless module which in turn sends it to an OMRON PLC and finally to an OMRON Servo motor which spins the wheel displaying the prizes the individual can win. The High Striker integrates several SMC pneumatic components besides the wireless module, including a cylinder, fittings and tubing.

The top scorer will win a brand-new Garmin watch; all participants will receive a prize.

With the Pandemic Still Lingering, Is Contract Manufacturing an Option?

Supply chain disruptions and a lack of skilled workers remain major impediments.

Manufacturers seem to be riding a seesaw lately. Back in the spring of last year, with the pandemic and recession gaining steam, manufacturing activity nosedived.

But optimism is returning. Nine out of ten manufacturers are somewhat or very positive about their company outlook, according to a recent NAM survey. NAM predicts that manufacturing production will likely exceed pre-pandemic levels in the third quarter this year, thanks to government stimulus, economic recovery and pent-up demand.

Of course, the outlook isn’t all rosy. Supply chain disruptions and a lack of skilled workers remain major impediments. Many manufacturers are desperately seeking workers to fill orders.

According to a recent study by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, roughly 1.4 million manufacturing jobs were initially wiped out during the pandemic, and while the industry has hired back 820,000 of these jobs, the remaining 570,000 are still vacant. The study also found that a manufacturing skills gap in the U.S. is anticipated to leave 2.1 million jobs unfilled by 2030.

Given this mixed picture, some manufacturers are increasingly relying on contract manufacturing to remain competitive. Industrial machinery and equipment manufacturers, for example, are partnering with contract manufacturers and assembly houses to develop, build and deliver new products to customers.

In some instances, contract manufacturing can help lower the total cost of ownership, including the various indirect costs that manufacturers often overlook or miscalculate when designing and building a machine or other piece of equipment. Direct costs, such as engineering fees, labor, materials, maintenance and repairs are easy to track. But indirect or hidden costs are difficult to account for and are often omitted from the decision-making process. These include the cost of technology and supply chain management, real estate expenses, taxes and indirect labor costs.

Of course, like any business strategy, determining whether contract manufacturing makes sense depends on several factors.

Manufacturers who are dealing with employees’ pandemic-related fears of returning to work, struggling to fill positions, concerned about overcapacity in the next economic downturn or unable to source parts may find that partnering with a contract manufacturer can address those issues.

Let’s look at why a hypothetical company, a manufacturer of industrial machinery, might decide to outsource some of its operations. Besides being unable to replace two recently retired engineers, it was experiencing costly delays in purchasing thousands of components, many from overseas. The company was experiencing a growth spurt but had outgrown its facility and was reluctant to take on the financial risk of leasing or buying additional space.

This manufacturer’s assembly is a prime candidate for outsourcing because it will be ordered in high volumes and built the same way nearly every time with standard widely available tools. And with many hours currently consumed with purchasing and expediting, the assembly can now be ordered under one part number, from one supplier, as a turn-key solution.

On the other hand, manufacturers who have the capacity to expand and contract their business during economic cycles – growth spurts and lulls – may determine that they can manage on their own. Outsourcing may not be a wise path if your assembly is highly specialized or customized each time it is built.

Other reasons that outsourcing may not be a good choice:

Your assembly is overly heavy, large, delicate or an unusual shape
Your assembly requires expensive or special tooling, testing equipment or safety equipment
The components needed to create your assembly are hard to get or cannot easily be made by other companies
Your assembly requires a specialized process that only those at your company know how to perform
Your assembly requires special or unusual certifications or manufacturing environments
Your assembly relies primarily on the knowledge and skills of a few key employees, rather than on solid documentation

Whether or not to outsource is a complex decision involving many factors. In the current uncertain economic environment, with the pandemic still a threat, the pros and cons should be carefully considered.

How has robotics affected the manufacturing industry in the age of COVID-19?

With companies more concerned about social distancing and workforce shortages, COVID-19 has accelerated the use and deployment of robotics . Concurrently, the China tariffs and recent sharp increases of raw metal prices have pressured the U.S. to produce more with less human labor. Many are worried that the Biden Administration stimulus bills will jumpstart inflation and hurt the strength of the U.S. dollar overseas, putting even more pressure on American companies to automate and stay competitive.

What is the outlook for robotics in the manufacturing environment over the next ten years?

Robots will continue to decrease in price and increase in capabilities and ease of use and programming over the next ten years. Robots will become even better at communicating with each other and coordinating movement to operate more efficiently. We will also see robots that are capable of recording and reporting more detailed forms of information and even making predictions about maintenance and repair. With the growing popularity of IOT and industry 4.0, robots will become part of a manufacturer’s network of automation devices such as switches, sensors and safety devices. As such, robots will be able to report process data over the cloud so information can be logged and monitored remotely.

We will also continue to see innovations. One of the fastest growing segments of robotics is warehouse automaton. From bin picking to palletizing, to packing and unpacking, mobile and fixed robots are being applied everywhere. The internet has opened the retail marketplace globally to a myriad of players. The need for faster delivery at lower cost is driving innovation in this market. For example, warehouse robots are now climbing shelves, flying, and moving in other unconventional ways. In retail, robots are inspecting empty shelves. I’ve even heard talk of robots replacing fry cooks. So, robots will become more independent and mobile.

Why have collaborative robots become so popular among manufacturers in recent years?

There are several reasons:

Safety. Keeping workers safe and dealing with litigation when things go wrong can be a huge, costly burden. Robots can operate in hazardous environments, and do not sue when they break down. When applied correctly, collaborative robots (cobots) can sometimes work among humans without additional safety devices or hard guarding.
Capability. Cobots can perform the monotonous, repetitive, and sometimes dangerous tasks that humans prefer not to do. Those employees can then be deployed to another step of the process or higher value area of the company.
High-tech. Many companies are embracing the idea of being more “high-tech” and moving manufacturing operations into the 21st century.
Competition. In light of the strong competition from low-cost manufacturing countries like China, Vietnam, and Taiwan, U.S. companies are looking for ways to keep their pricing competitive. Deploying automation can achieve this goal. In some instances, automation enables output per worker to nearly double.
Ease of deployment. Cobots are increasingly easy to apply and deploy, which has expanded the market tremendously. Depending on the complexity of the project, many end users can now install and program a robot themselves without the need to involve a third-party integrator. This reduces both start-up time and cost when automating a simple manual process.

Are collaborative robots safe out of the box?

One of the biggest misconceptions about robots, particularly cobots, is that they are safe out of the box. According to OSHA, that is not always the case. Depending on the speed, tooling, work area and other factors, even a cobot may require safety devices and/or hard guarding. When installing a cobot it is imperative that end users have a valid safety audit performed by a reputable company to identify any potential risks or hazards before handing it over to the production team. Often, teaming up with a reputable systems integrator can help avoid potential safety issues.

How has the “gold rush” in robotics created the robotics accessory ecosystem and what new products do these accessory companies offer?

Many innovative off-shoot companies are springing up amid the heightened demand for complimentary accessory components. These include companies that produce accessories such as special grippers, stands and cameras that complement robots.

Another growing industry is being driven by companies who specify and distribute these components to OEMs and end users. Companies like ours who distribute and add value to accessory components are seeing a major increase in demand. A robot or cobot can move wherever you tell it to, but it can’t grip, sense, inspect or sort without some other component or system. When you sell a robot, the amount of additional required pneumatic components, sensing products, vision inspection systems and machine safety products can cost as much or more than the robot itself. Every robot sold has an exponential economic ripple effect well beyond the price of the robot itself.

Kick-Starting a Company with Contract Manufacturing

It began with a simple phone call to Pearse Bertram+ Streamline Contract Manufacturing in the fall of 2018.

Jack Manning was asking for a quote on a valve to be used in a motorcycle starter system that his startup company was building. That initial conversation blossomed into a deep and lasting business relationship in which Pearse Bertram has served in a comprehensive contract manufacturing role.

Enhancing vintage motorcycles

Jack, a former vice president of engineering at Lockheed Martin, is the longtime owner of Vermont-based The Classic Bike Experience which specializes in motorcycle restoration, repairs, parts and services. In 2018, Jack and his partners decided to expand their operations by forming KickMagic LLC to develop a pneumatic-assist kick starter for the vintage motorcycle market. The product, which can be installed without modifying the motorcycle, enables motorcycles to start easier and protects riders from injury due to dangerous kickbacks.

Shortly after receiving that call from Jack, Pearse Bertram’s Josh Baptiste visited KickMagic’s shop and quickly realized there was a huge opportunity to significantly transform the entire manufacturing process, from beginning to end.

Benefit of value engineering

Initially, Jack made some suggestions to help KickMagic design additional functionality into the product’s circuit board. Pearse Bertram’s role then expanded into an end-to-end contract manufacturing provider. Pearse Bertram value engineered the project – analyzing KickMagic’s bill of materials and product design, identifying components that were unnecessary or priced inefficiently and finding high quality, low cost suppliers, all with the goal of reducing overall costs.

According to Jack, “As our manufacturing partner, Pearse revamped our cost model by eliminating some components, substituting others and buying in quantity. Pearse really helped us understand what levers to pull. Our product wouldn’t have been commercially viable without Pearse because we don’t have its industrial manufacturing expertise.”

Light bulb goes on

Soon after partnering with Pearse Bertram, a “light bulb” went on in Jack’s head, he recalls. “While we were certainly comfortable handling the system engineering and shopping for industrial components ourselves, we realized that Pearse could take on the whole project including manufacturing strategy, sourcing parts, tech solutions and fulfillment,” he says. Pearse’s complete turnkey operation was the most appealing aspect of the partnership for KickMagic.

At the time, KickMagic had a skeleton engineering team consisting of a handful of engineering students at the University of Vermont who helped on a part-time basis. But the company didn’t have the staff or capacity to build thousands of the starter kits.

Pearse Bertram, on the other hand, with its extensive resources, staff, experience and warehouse space at its headquarters in Connecticut, was able to serve in a comprehensive contract manufacturing role. Thus, Pearse Bertram sourced, stocked, assembled and tested all the parts. It then packaged and labelled complete assemblies and shipped them directly to KickMagic’s customers. “At the end of the day, our team didn’t even need to pick up a wrench,” notes Jack.

The right partner makes a difference

Jack and his partners’ deep industrial experience taught them that having the right manufacturing partners made much more sense than chasing vendors, piling up inventory and working late into the night to assemble and box up product for shipping the next morning. Partnering with Pearse Bertram added credibility and enabled KickMagic to manufacture its product in a professional manner, according to Jack.

What is total cost of ownership?

Total cost of ownership is a measurement of the total amount of money spent on acquiring an asset. TCO involves evaluating both the direct costs of the purchase as well as the indirect costs associated with acquiring, owning, and operating the equipment. By incorporating TCO into the decision-making process, organizations can make decisions that better align with their overall business objectives.

Direct and hidden costs of manufacturing

Direct costs are those expenses that are connected to an identifiable “ cost object .” They are easy to track and can be used to accurately estimate costs as part of the product development process.

Some examples of direct costs include:

Labor
Materials
Scrap and rework
Maintenance and repairs
Compliance

Hidden or indirect costs are difficult to account for and are not connected to an identifiable “cost object.” In manufacturing, these costs are not directly assignable to the end product and/or acquisition of manufacturing equipment, and are commonly omitted from the decision-making process. Even when included in the decision process, these costs are often miscalculated, resulting in less than optimal decisions.

Some examples of indirect costs include:

Supply chain management
Operations (i.e., loss of focus on core competencies)

Labor costs not associated with a manufacturing process (i.e., janitorial services)

Risk factors

Risk factors are a critically important metric that are often overlooked. OEMs may face significant risks due to a lack of supporting infrastructure and established processes. For example, small or highly specialized OEMs are unlikely to have the resources to hire in-house compliance experts, potentially exposing themselves to legal or regulatory challenges.

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated to manufacturers how devastating these risks can be. For example, supply chain interruptions, fluctuations in demand, and new safety regulations have hindered production. Calculating TCO

The following TCO formula can be used to calculate the direct and indirect costs of acquiring or manufacturing equipment. (Since risk factors are highly speculative, they are not included in the formula)

TCO = I + O + M + D + P + R

“ I ” - Initial cost of the equipment.
“ O ” - Cost of operating the equipment.
“ M ” - Cost of maintenance, including routine repairs and reactive maintenance when equipment breaks down.
“ D ” - Downtime, and costs unrelated to repairing the equipment such as lost productivity, customers and opportunities to take on new projects.
“ P ” – Costs of production including indirect costs associated with the production process (i.e., environmental implications).
“ R ” Remaining value of the equipment or expected depreciation over a fixed period.

If the TCO formula seems too complicated and you just want a quick ballpark estimate, simply add the initial and maintenance costs, then subtract the remaining value from the total (TCO = I + M – R). For example, if the price of a machine is $25,000 with estimated maintenance costs of $10,000 and a remaining value of $7,000 after 5 years, the total cost of ownership is $28,000.

The pandemic has impacted nearly every facet of the industry. The manufacturing response has largely been reactive and uncoordinated . And, understandably, many organizations’ crisis management plans do not account for an outbreak of an infectious disease on a global scale. Supply Chains

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) released a survey in the early days of the pandemic that examined the impacts of COVID-19 on businesses and supply chains. Approximately 75% of companies surveyed reported supply chain disruption with many experiencing sharp drops in revenue.

Fluctuating Consumer Demand

A subsequent survey conducted by ISM in July of 2020 found that 81% of respondents reported decreased demand for their products. Four industries, however, reported higher demand: health care and social assistance (+13%), finance and insurance (+7%), food, beverage, and tobacco products (+5%), and computer and electronic products (+3%).

Some manufacturers responded by pivoting from their core products to supply critical equipment and devices. Many achieved this by leveraging technology and relying on contract manufacturing services.

One COVID-positive case within an organization can bring production to a halt. Safety regulations mandate lengthy quarantine periods. Manufacturers are left scrambling, often repurposing employees to fill multiple roles. As a result, quality, safety, and productivity suffer.

Tech Tip: Most Common Causes of Contactor Chatter and Noise

QUESTION: What are the possible reasons for unexpected noise coming from the contactor?

ANSWER: Chatter, humming or buzzing coming from a contactor indicates a problem and should be investigated. Here are three common issues thatcould cause unexpected noises from an installed contactor.

The control voltage supplying the coil is not in the acceptable range for the coil rating

The control source is not providing the necessary current to pick up the coil

There is debris on the pole faces of the yoke and armature

CONTROL VOLTAGE

Typically, coils are designed to pick-up and operate between 85% and 110% of their rated voltage. To verify that the control voltage is aligned properly with the selected coil, the voltage should be measured at the coil terminals (A1/A2) and not at the voltage source since other control devices may be tapped off of the control source (e.g.; control transformer, power supply, etc.). The intent is to confirm that the voltage ratings shown on the coil match the incoming voltage source to the coil. Once the device that is being operated is in the sealed state, the drop-out voltage will be about 60% of the rated voltage. Excess heat is the main cause of shortening the life of a coil. Even though the coil can operate at 110% of rated voltage, doing so for long periods of time will create higher temperatures and may shorten coil life.

CONTROL SOURCE

Operating coils for contactors and relays rely on current in the windings to produce enough magnetic flux to span the ‘air gap’. The air gap is the distance between the pole faces of the yoke and armature which is at a maximum distance when the device is open or OFF. Once a START signal is initiated the coil will draw “inrush current” and the yoke and armature start to come together, the air gap decreases and current demand starts to decrease as well. The sealed state results in zero air gap and the amount of current required to keep the pole faces together is at a minimum and is referred to as “seal current” or “sealed current” or “steady state current”. The amount of current required to pick-up and seal an AC or DC controlled device can be calculated from the VA ratings for inrush and seal found in the specifications for that device. Simply divide the VA rating by the coil voltage to calculate the required ampere rating of the control source.

DEBRIS

Debris, especially large debris like plastic or metal shavings may make the device noisy and may cause the coil to draw more current than it is rated for at seal. Oxidation and rust can appear on pole faces and cause noise, also. This is more likely to be seen in older devices or those used in high humidity or corrosive environments. Pole faces are specially grounded to be flat to approximately .001” T.I.R. (total indicator reading) or less so they seal tightly against each other which is why they must be kept as free from debris as possible.

A common contributing factor to having a debris problem is created when the clean-up is done after enclosure/backpan modifications and an air gun is used to blow debris and particles out of the box. More harm is being done than good because the blowing of air creates flying debris and increases the likelihood of these particles ending up inside the components. A more productive way to remove the debris from inside an enclosure would be to use a vacuum, as opposed to an air gun.
